Rober Donates Mattress To Chesterfield Hospital In Support Of NHS Change Day

Taking part in this year’s staff-led campaign, Rober have donated one of their innovative mattress systems in a bid to help reduce pressure related injuries.

It has been specially designed and manufactured to replicate the body’s natural movements, helping to eliminate bed sores and provide patients with ultimate comfort and safety.

According data provided by the NHS ‘Stop the Pressure campaign’, it is estimated that pressure ulcers increase the cost of a patient’s care bill by £4,000 and each year 700,000 patients will receive a pressure ulcer whilst in hospital.

Despite these figures research shows that 80-95% of ulcers are avoidable so the company wants to work closely with NHS staff to offer support and training on how to prevent and treat pressure related injuries.

Rober’s pledge supports the national NHS Day campaign which took place on the 11th March 2015. The event gave staff, families, organisations and charities an opportunity to come together to make a series of small changes which together can help create a big difference within the NHS.

The donated mattress from Rober uses a clinically proven two-cell cycle which responds to a patient’s weight, spontaneous movement pattern and body position, providing enhanced comfort and complete pressure elimination at regular intervals.

The ‘wave-like ripple effect’ allows the body weight of the patient to be distributed evenly creating a soft, comfortable but stable surface, that doesn’t compromise on clinical outcomes. It is easy to use and has been designed with patient and carer safety in mind to offer a therapeutic effect that promotes accelerated wound healing.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital is working hard to reduce pressure ulcers and with our support and this new mattress system, we hope pressure injuries can be reduced even further throughout the year.”

Diane Simpson is the Senior Matron for Infection Prevention and Control, she said: “This is an incredibly kind gesture from Rober and will be of great benefit to our patients. Pressure Ulcer prevention is a vital part of our efforts to protect patients from harm and we have done a great deal of work across all wards and training with staff to minimise the risk.

“This type of mattress helps to relieve the pressure that causes pressure ulcers so this donation and the recognition for what NHS Change Day is all about is welcomed by the Trust to help keep our patients comfortable and safe.”

NHS Change Day is now in its third year and last year was supported by 800,000 pledges ranging from painting hospitals differently to clinical staff introducing themselves to patients by name. This year the campaign estimates that 1.3m pledges was made across the country.

"NHS Change day is all about the thousands of changes that workers on the front line know need to be done. It's about giving ourselves permission to get on and improve things," said Charlie Walton, one of the leaders of NHS Change Day.

"People join the NHS because they are passionate about patient care — about saving lives and making things better. If each of us makes one small change, together we can change how the world works. Last year 800,000 people signed up to promise they would change things. This year we want to go beyond promises. We're asking each other — what is the change you are making?"
