The Mortar Paving System was used as part of their ongoing improvements to Bodø City Centre.

The aim of the rejuvenation project is to make Bodø an attractive city to live and operate in. This will be achieved by developing efficient, environmentally friendly and safe transport which includes new roundabouts, bridges, underpasses, cycle lanes and sidewalks.

Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø is known for its extremely cold and windy winters, and so, the materials used to install the transport infrastructure needed to withstand these extremely cold temperatures and not break out and cause any damage during the freezing winter months.

In 2017, the first three roundabouts were installed using UltraScape’s British Standard 7533 Mortar Paving System. The fourth roundabout was completed in 2018, with the fifth, and final, roundabout due to be installed in 2019.

The durable and aesthetically pleasing finish of UltraScape’s Mortar Paving System made it an ideal choice for completing these exciting upgrades.

The project began by priming the armed concrete substrate with Pro-Prime slurry primer before Pro-Bed HS high performance bedding mortar was applied. The pavers were then primed using Pro-Prime and grouted using Flowpoint ECO – an environmentally friendly, rapid set flowable grout, which contains 20% recycled glass.

Supplied by Instarmac International’s Norwegian partner, Betomur AS, Pro-Bed HS can be laid from 10-75mm, is pre-blended for ease of use and can be opened to foot traffic in just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the project quickly.

Formulated to provide an exceptional bond between the paving elements and Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime slurry primer eliminates costly failures caused by general wear and tear and heavy load bearing vehicles.

Ideal for large-scale projects, Flowpoint ECO has been developed over a number of years to provide a durable finish which will not crack or stain – a guarantee that was certainly put to the test in the extremely cold winters in Bodø.

Supplied in 25kg bags, Flowpoint ECO can be used to grout joints from 3mm to 50mm and as deep as 200mm in one application – ideal for applications where a number of different sized stones will be used, or on uneven areas, such as this project.

What’s more, Flowpoint ECO can receive foot traffic in 1 hour and vehicle traffic in 4 hours keeping disruption to motorists and pedestrians to a minimum.
