Mabey Bridge Ltd – a global leader in bridging and steel manufacture for infrastructure and renewable energy – has secured a major contract to supply steel bridging to Qatar to support the country’s Local Roads & Drainage Programme. The deal, worth £2.6 million, will see the UK-based company designing, fabricating and delivering four Atlas Steel Deck Modular Bridges to facilitate a major highways extension.

Qatar's Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has signed new contracts worth a combined $2.8 billion as part of its Local Roads & Drainage Programme that will see 200 projects delivered in the next 5 to 7 years. The Programme supports the Qatar National Vision 2030 that, through a range of projects valued at over QR 100 billion, will see Qatar transformed into a highly advanced society.

Speaking about the deal, Chris Droogan, CEO of Mabey Bridge said, “This is a very important contract as Mabey Bridge builds on its already excellent international reputation and pushes into new and important territories. The company is already well established on the global marketplace and we sell our highly successful modular bridging range into over 140 countries. This contract will further illustrate our international capabilities. Qatar is a country working towards an extremely exciting vision for its future, and we are pleased to be a part of delivering that vision.”

Ghazi Joueidi, General Sales Manager of Mabey Bridge in the Middle East added, “The terrain and environment in Qatar is very harsh and the construction challenges considerable. The country needs infrastructure that is tried and tested and capable of delivering a robust solution during a period of dramatic change.

“Mabey Bridge’s range of modular bridges is highly successful around the world and has proven itself in the most demanding situations – from emergency bridging following natural disasters and conflict, to essential urban traffic improvement schemes in some of the world’s busiest cities. The Atlas Bridging System will provide the capacity to support the important development work within Qatar.”

The Mabey Bridge contract is with Qatar Building Company and the steel bridges will be used on the construction of Highway 55, Temporary Truck Route Section A&B. The project will provide a temporary truck route to divert heavy vehicles out and around urban areas, creating a direct link between the Mesaieed, Industrial City and the planned city of Lusail. Work on the Highway started 1st November 2013 and is expected to be completed third quarter of 2014.
