Metric have only recently started to have success in Estonia, a country that, despite its small size, insists on using the very latest technology.

Credit card use is widespread, even for low-value payments such as on-street parking charges, and so Metric is supplying parking machines that not only accept payment with coins and banknotes but also with chip and PIN credit cards.

The sophisticated specification includes full chip and pin credit card functionality, with card payments being processed on-line using GPRS communications. The validity of the user’s card is checked in exactly the same way as for any other credit card payment, via the in-built PIN pad, and payment is accepted only after authorisation by the bank.

This Metric Elite is the second of its kind to be supplied to Estonia recently. The customer, AS Ühisteenused, which is one of the main parking management companies in Estonia, is reported as being impressed with the technology, and the General Manager of Metric’s distributor, Asematic OU, said “I hope that this machine gives other operators a good picture of it and it helps us to more sales in the future.“

Metric’s International Sales Manager, Mike Hewett, explained: “The Scandinavian and Baltic markets demand the very latest technology and we are pleased to see that we are breaking into the market in Estonia. We are aiming to match our previous success in neighbouring Latvia.”
