SWAN is a worldwide industry forum promoting and shaping the use of data technologies in water networks, making them smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. SWAN brings industry leaders together to create and accelerate awareness and effective use of smart data systems for water networks.

The SWAN Forum encourages targeted discussion to:

• Raise awareness for smart water networks
• Create and report upon the methodologies, standard performance indicators, and industry best practices
• Develop new approaches and solutions to improve network operations
• Share members’ experience, case studies and research
• Promote interoperability, synergy and common measurements

SWAN’s mission is to “connect and represent a global network of water professionals engaged with Smart Water Network approaches, in order to promote the development and adoption of data driven systems for better water network management and operation.”

As water supplies decrease and pressure on the world’s water networks increases, smarter management of existing assets is becoming increasingly important. A smart water network uses data-driven software and components to automatically optimise the performance of reservoirs, pumps, water and wastewater treatment plants and distribution pipes. With rapid development in wireless technologies and data monitoring hardware, Smart Networks are at the forefront of the innovation movement in the water sector globally. The use of data technologies has been widely used in the economy for years, from oil and gas to electricity utilities, but it’s relatively new in the water sector.

Membership of SWAN is part of BHR Group’s focus of bringing innovative, cost effective solutions to its clients. For example, 2013 has seen the launch of the BHR Group led iRETINA consortium – a major, Smart Water project being proposed globally. Early feedback in the Gulf has been very positive and it is hoped iRETINA can build on this initial success and be rolled out to the Asia-Pacific region in 2014.

SWAN membership gives BHR Group the opportunity to collaborate with other industry leading corporations and individuals, both nationally and internationally, to work towards the improved efficiency, longevity and reliability of water networks around the world. Examples of other high profile SWAN members include Costain, ABB, Schneider Electric, TaKaDu, Siemens, Talis and Grundfos, as well as water providers and treatment specialists from across the globe.

Speaking earlier today Dr. Yolande Herbath, BHR Group Strategy Director and International Chair of British Water said, “The timing of our Membership with SWAN is opportune as it reinforces our presence and dynamic sales and marketing efforts in the Gulf region, led by myself and Stephen Pring. Smart Water networks are built as an overlay and we are anticipating greater insight and understanding of, for instance, how our flow simulation and predictive modelling capabilities integrate with real time data networks. SWAN will also be an excellent Forum in which to exchange new ideas and network globally.”
